Johnston's Coffee Shop
Our office is located one block East of US 1 and one block South of Route 92, on the corner of Magnolia Avenue and Palmetto Avenue in downtown Daytona Beach. Built in 1935, it was originally home to Johnston’s Coffee Shop. Best known for the World’s Best Apple Pie, the elegant restaurant was decorated with large fire places and chandeliers that once belonged to Napoleon. Many of the rich and famous northerners that wintered in the Daytona area took their cocktails and meals here for over 30 years. The railroad station was just down the street and many of the better hotels surrounded the coffee shop.
Carmichael's & Magnolia Grill
As auto travel became more popular and after the opening of the interstates, I4 and I95, the popular downtown area lost its charm and the coffee shop closed. Johnston’s Coffee Shop was replaced by a trendy dinner spot called the Beef and Bottle and enjoyed a decade or more of success catering to the locals. Our building stayed a restaurant for many years becoming Carmichael’s and then the Magnolia Grill before becoming a private girl’s school. We have remodeled the interior into commercial offices while keeping the building’s historically architecturally interesting character. A century old oak tree still guards the front door of the building. During the holidays the old oak was the most beautifully decorated Christmas tree in the downtown area. If you sit very quiet in our conference room, you can almost hear the clicking of glasses and silverware and smell a whiff of apple pie.
